In this episode of Discovery Rangers, we're zooming in on supersonic speeds on Mars! We learned that some Mars drones can fly faster than the speed of sound there. Let's explore how fast that really is!
The Big Question
How can we imagine something going faster than sound?
What You'll Need
- A stopwatch or timer (phone works great!)
- A large open space (indoors or outdoors)
- A loud, sharp noise maker (like clapping your hands, a whistle, or a toy horn)
Mission Steps
- Gather Your Gear. Find your open space and have your noise maker and timer ready.
- Listen for the Boom. Have one person stand at one end of the space. The other person stands at the other end with the timer.
- Make a Sound. The person with the noise maker will make a very quick, loud sound (like a clap). The person with the timer starts it immediately when they see the sound being made.
- Stop the Timer. The person with the timer stops it as soon as they hear the sound. Record the time.
- Repeat and Compare. Do this a few times. Does the time change much? Now, imagine if you could react faster than that time, that’s kind of like going supersonic!

Take It Further
For older rangers (9-12), research the actual speed of sound on Earth and on Mars. Calculate how much faster a Mars drone's rotor blades would have to spin to break the sound barrier on Mars compared to the speed of sound on Earth.

Q: My kids can't clap loud enough for the timer. What can we do? A: Try a whistle or a toy horn, or have one person see the clap and shout "Now!" for the timer person to start.
