Get Your Own OpenRouter Key For Family AI Tools

Some Parenting With Purpose tools include a small free AI quota. That keeps the site useful without accounts, but it also means the shared generator may rest when lots of families are using it.

The clean workaround is BYOK: bring your own key. You create a key with an AI provider, paste it into the tool for that session, and the request runs against your quota instead of ours. We do not store your key.

1. Create an OpenRouter account

Open OpenRouter and create an account. If we add an affiliate or partner link later, we will label it clearly.

2. Add a small budget

Start tiny. A few dollars is usually enough for many short printable ideas or story prompts when you choose a low-cost model.

3. Create an API key

In OpenRouter, open the API keys section and create a new key. Copy it once and keep it private. Treat it like a password.

4. Paste it only into tools you trust

Parenting With Purpose tools use your key only for the request you make. Do not paste API keys into random websites, shared docs, or public chats.

5. Teach your child the bigger lesson

The real lesson is not “AI writes things.” It is that tools have costs, limits, and responsibilities. A child who learns that early is already ahead.
