Light is a form of energy that zips around incredibly fast. Think of it like tiny packets of energy called photons. In the air, light travels at about 300,000 kilometers every single second. Let's imagine you're standing 1 kilometer away from a lightning bolt. The light from that bolt would reach you in about 0.0000033 seconds. That's so fast, we can't even notice the tiny delay.

Fun Fact: The speed of light is so fast that even if you were standing at the very back of a football stadium, the light from a touchdown would reach your eyes before the ball even landed!

3. The Slower Sound Wave

Sound is a bit different. It's a vibration that travels through the air as a pressure wave. Sound is much slower than light. In dry air, sound moves at about 343 meters per second. That's roughly 1,125 feet per second.

Now, let's go back to that 1 kilometer distance. If the lightning struck 1 kilometer away, the sound of the thunder would take about 2.9 seconds to reach you. So, you see the flash right away, and then you hear the boom a few seconds later.

4. The Race Between Light and Sound

Light and sound both start from the same place: the lightning bolt itself. But they are on very different journeys.

  • Light is like a super-fast race car. It zooms straight to your eyes almost instantly.
  • Sound is more like a bicycle rider. It takes a while to cover the same distance.

  1. When you see the lightning flash, start counting. You can say "one-one-one, two-one-one, three-one-one..." which sounds like "one second, two seconds, three seconds..."
  2. When you hear the thunder, stop counting.
  3. Take the number of seconds you counted and divide it by 3. The answer is the distance to the lightning strike in kilometers.

For example, if you count 9 seconds between the flash and the thunder, you divide 9 by 3. That gives you 3. So, the lightning struck about 3 kilometers away.
