Volcanoes, Bicycles, and Monsters: The Year Without a Summer

In the summer of 1816, it snowed in June. In Vermont. While farmers were out trying to plant corn. Birds dropped out of trees, frozen. Crops turned black overnight in the middle of July.

Up there, the tiny specks of ash and droplets of gas spread out and wrapped around the entire Earth like a thin, hazy blanket. Scientists call it a "sulphate aerosol veil." You can think of it as a giant pair of sunglasses slapped over the whole planet.
And sunglasses do one job: they block sunlight. With less sun getting through, Earth started to cool off. Not by a huge amount, the average temperature dipped somewhere between 0.4 and 0.7 degrees Celsius. Sounds tiny, right?
It wasn't. A small nudge to the global thermostat can throw weather everywhere into chaos. The sun looked dim and weak. In New England, it snowed in June and July. Fields in Europe froze solid in the middle of summer. China and Switzerland got hammered by floods. India's monsoon showed up late and wrong, flooding the land and helping a deadly disease called cholera spread. Country after country, the food just... didn't grow.

A German inventor named Karl Drais looked at the mess and asked a great question: what if you didn't need a horse at all? In 1817, he built a two-wheeled wooden contraption you sat on and pushed along with your feet, like scooting a giant scooter. He called it a Laufmaschine. "running machine." Later people nicknamed it the "dandy-horse." We'd call it the great-great-grandparent of the bicycle.
The whole point was that it ran on you. No oats, no hay, no horse. Just legs. So a volcano in Indonesia made oats expensive, expensive oats made horses too pricey, and pricey horses pushed a guy to invent the bike. Wild, right?
