The Spice Wars: How Pepper & Cinnamon Changed the World

A hands-on field mission for the Discovery Rangers episode.

Listen to the episode

In "The Spice Wars," we learned how common spices like pepper and cinnamon were once incredibly valuable and even sparked wars! This mission will help you explore the amazing flavors and history of these ancient treasures right in your own kitchen.

The Big Question

Why were certain spices like pepper and cinnamon so important in history that people fought and traveled across the world for them?

What You'll Need

  • Ground black pepper
  • Ground cinnamon
  • Small, clear cups or bowls (one for each spice)
  • Spoons for tasting (or clean fingers!)
  • Paper towels for wiping
  • A small piece of plain bread or cracker (optional)

Mission Steps

  1. Sniff the Spice. Open the pepper and cinnamon. Take a good sniff of each. What do they smell like on their own?
  2. Taste the Spice. Carefully put a tiny pinch of pepper on your tongue. Notice the taste. Then, try a tiny pinch of cinnamon. How are the tastes different?
  3. Flavor Test. If you have bread or crackers, put a tiny pinch of pepper on one piece and a tiny pinch of cinnamon on another. Taste them now with the bread. How does the bread change the flavor?
  4. Imagine the Past. Think about how strong these flavors are. Imagine if you had never tasted anything like them before. How might you feel about them?

Talk About It

  • What did the pepper and cinnamon smell and taste like before you put them on the bread?
  • How did the bread change the way the pepper and cinnamon tasted?
  • Why do you think people long ago would want to trade for and even fight over these strong flavors?

Take It Further

For older rangers, try to identify where pepper and cinnamon come from on a map. Research other ancient spices like nutmeg or cloves. Were they also involved in trade or conflict? How do modern refrigeration and food preservation methods compare to the historical role of spices?

FAQ

Q: What if my child doesn't like the taste of pepper or cinnamon? A: That's perfectly okay! The mission is about exploring the difference and the intensity of the flavors. They can still participate by smelling and observing.

Q: Is it safe for young children to taste spices directly? A: Yes, using very small pinches of common ground spices like pepper and cinnamon is safe for tasting. Always supervise closely and have water available.

The Ranger Field Mission

Works after any episode · Any age · No equipment

Run this after every episode to turn listening into something your child actually keeps. Do as many steps as they have energy for — even one counts.

  1. 1

    Say it back

Before snacks or screens, ask your Ranger to teach you the one big idea — as if you'd never heard it.

  2. 2

    Find it in the wild

Hunt for one real example of today's idea — in the kitchen, the yard, the sky, or the sidewalk. Point at it and name it.

  3. 3

    Make something

Draw it, build it from what's on the table, act it out, or record a 20-second “Ranger report.” Making it forces real understanding.

  4. 4

    Ask the next question

Finish with “What's one thing the episode didn't answer?” Stick it on the fridge — that's the start of the next adventure.
