The Science of Fake Flavors: Strawberry & Steak Secrets

A hands-on field mission for the Discovery Rangers episode.

Listen to the episode

In "The Science of Fake Flavors," we learned how scientists use tiny molecules to create the tastes of foods like strawberries and steak, even when the real ingredients aren't there! Now, you can become a flavor detective and explore the amazing tastes and smells around you.

The Big Question

How can we use our senses to identify different flavors and smells?

What You'll Need

  • Small, safe food items with distinct smells and tastes (e.g., a slice of lemon, a piece of mint, a sprinkle of cinnamon, a small cube of cheese)
  • Small cups or bowls for each item
  • A blindfold or a way to cover your eyes
  • A notebook and pencil

Mission Steps

  1. Prepare Your Station. Place each food item in its own cup. Make sure you can't see what's inside.
  2. Blindfold Your Ranger. Have one family member put on the blindfold.
  3. Sniff and Guess. Gently waft the smell of one food item towards the blindfolded ranger's nose. Ask them to describe the smell and guess what it might be.
  4. Taste and Identify. Carefully give the blindfolded ranger a tiny taste of the food. Ask them to describe the taste and see if they can guess correctly.
  5. Record Your Findings. Write down the food item, its smell description, its taste description, and whether the ranger guessed correctly in your notebook. Switch roles and repeat!

Talk About It

  • What smells were easy or hard to guess? Why do you think that was?
  • How did your sense of smell help or change your sense of taste?
  • Can you think of other foods where smell is just as important as taste?

Take It Further

For older rangers (ages 9-12), try tasting the food items without smelling them first. See if you can identify the flavors only by taste, then do it again while smelling. Discuss how much your sense of smell contributes to the overall flavor experience.

FAQ

Q: My child has allergies. How can I adapt this mission? A: Use safe, allergy-friendly items your child can enjoy, or even just focus on smells from safe household items like flowers, spices (if safe), or fruits you can't eat.

Q: What if my child is hesitant to try new things? A: Never force a child to taste something. Focus on the smelling part of the mission, and encourage them to describe the smells without pressure to taste.

The Ranger Field Mission

Works after any episode · Any age · No equipment

Run this after every episode to turn listening into something your child actually keeps. Do as many steps as they have energy for — even one counts.

  1. 1

    Say it back

Before snacks or screens, ask your Ranger to teach you the one big idea — as if you'd never heard it.

  2. 2

    Find it in the wild

Hunt for one real example of today's idea — in the kitchen, the yard, the sky, or the sidewalk. Point at it and name it.

  3. 3

    Make something

Draw it, build it from what's on the table, act it out, or record a 20-second “Ranger report.” Making it forces real understanding.

  4. 4

    Ask the next question

Finish with “What's one thing the episode didn't answer?” Stick it on the fridge — that's the start of the next adventure.
