The Big Question

How can we change a message so only someone with the secret can read it?

What You'll Need

• Paper
• Pen or pencil
• A friend or family member to share your code with

Mission Steps

1. Create Your Alphabet. Write out the regular alphabet (A-Z) on a piece of paper.
2. Make Your Secret Key. On another piece of paper, write out a shifted alphabet. For example, shift each letter three places forward: A becomes D, B becomes E, and so on, wrapping Z back to C. This is your secret key! Keep it safe.
3. Write Your Secret Message. Write a short message using your normal alphabet.
4. Encode Your Message. Now, use your secret key to rewrite your message. Find each letter of your message on the normal alphabet line, and write the letter directly below it from your shifted alphabet line.
5. Decode Your Friend's Message. Swap your encoded message with your friend. Use your secret key to translate it back into a readable message.
