Some seabirds raise their chicks in burrows dug right into cliff soil, and when those homes get wrecked, the whole colony can be in danger. Seabirds are a magical part of our coasts and oceans, and like all families, they need safe places to raise their young. But what happens when those safe places are in trouble? That’s exactly the puzzle scientists and conservationists are wrestling with right now, and it’s a fascinating topic for our Discovery Rangers!

1. Who Are These Amazing Seabirds?

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of their homes, let's get acquainted with our feathered friends of the sea. The research report defines a seabird as a bird that gets most of its food from the ocean. Think of puffins with their colorful beaks, graceful terns soaring overhead, or the tiny, industrious auklets. These birds have special adaptations for their marine lifestyle, whether it’s for diving deep for fish or expertly navigating the ocean winds. Their home, or habitat, can be anything from rocky cliffs and sandy shores to small, remote islands. Inside their habitat, they create a nest, which is a safe spot to lay their precious eggs and nurture their chicks. For some seabirds, like the Cassin's auklet mentioned in our report, their nest is a burrow, a tunnel dug into the soil or sand.

Fun Fact: Many seabirds spend more time at sea than on land, only coming ashore to breed and raise their young!

2. Why Should We Care About Seabirds?

You might be wondering, why all the fuss about seabirds? Well, these birds play incredibly important roles in our planet’s ecosystems. They are like tiny but mighty helpers in the ocean's food chain, feasting on fish and small sea creatures. By keeping these populations in check, they help maintain a healthy balance in the ocean. Scientists also see seabirds as nature’s messengers. When seabird populations are thriving, it’s a good sign that the ocean is healthy. But if they start to struggle, it can signal that something is wrong beneath the waves. And let's not forget the pure joy they bring us! Imagine the delight of spotting a large colony of terns or hearing the distinctive calls of puffins. This wildlife watching can also be a wonderful boost for local communities and economies.

3. What Are the Big Threats Facing Seabird Homes?

Our seabird friends are facing some serious challenges, and it’s important for us to understand them. The research report highlights several major threats:

  • Climate Change: As our planet warms, the oceans are also getting warmer. This can make it harder for seabirds to find their usual food sources, like small fish. They might have to travel much farther to eat, which can be exhausting and sometimes leads to starvation, especially for chicks. A study in the Northern Hemisphere, for instance, showed that fish-eating seabirds had less success raising their young in warmer years.
  • Invasive Plants: These are plants that don't originally belong in a certain place but have arrived and are causing problems. On islands like Scorpion Rock, an invasive plant called crystalline iceplant took over. It grew so thickly that it covered almost the entire island, pushing out the native plants that seabirds needed for shelter and nesting.
  • Predators: Sometimes, animals that aren't native to an island can become a threat to seabirds. These predators, like rats, foxes, or certain owls, can eat seabird eggs and chicks. On Scorpion Rock, for example, barn owls and peregrine falcons prey on Cassin's auklets.
  • Human Disturbance: Believe it or not, sometimes our presence can be disruptive. Boats getting too close to nesting sites can scare the birds away from their nests, leaving their eggs or chicks vulnerable. To prevent this, some areas have implemented "Special Closures," creating zones where boats must stay far away, sometimes up to 1,000 feet! This can reduce disturbance by as much as 95 percent.
  • Pollution & Plastic: This is a heartbreaking one. Birds sometimes mistake pieces of plastic for food. Sadly, studies suggest that a large percentage of seabird deaths are linked to them ingesting plastic.

Fun Fact: Some seabirds, like the Arctic Tern, migrate further than any other animal on Earth, traveling from the Arctic to the Antarctic and back every year!

4. Fixing Up Old Seabird Homes: The Story of Scorpion Rock

One inspiring example of bringing an old seabird home back to life is the story of Scorpion Rock. This small island off the coast of California was in trouble because of that invasive crystalline iceplant we talked about. By 2008, it had covered a staggering 94% of the island!

But dedicated scientists and volunteers didn't give up. Starting in 2000, they began by putting out artificial nest boxes to help the Cassin's auklets. Then, between 2008 and 2012, a huge effort was made to remove the iceplant and plant an amazing 9,000 native plants from 21 different species. The results have been incredible! By 2012, the invasive plants were less than 3% of the island, and native plants covered 58%. Fast forward to 2022, and native plants were up to about 70%. Even better, the number of natural burrows for the auklets grew from just a handful to over two dozen! This shows that by removing the harmful plants and bringing back the native ones, we can create safe and welcoming homes for seabirds again.

Try This at Home: Imagine you have a favorite toy that’s broken. How would you fix it? You might glue it, tape it, or replace a missing piece. Think about the efforts on Scorpion Rock, they “fixed” the island by removing the bad stuff and adding the good stuff back. You can draw a picture of a broken toy and then draw how you would fix it, just like scientists fixed Scorpion Rock!

5. Building Brand New Seabird Refuges: The Solent Seascape Project

While fixing old homes is crucial, some scientists are also looking to the future and building entirely new safe havens. The Solent Seascape Project in the UK is a fantastic example of this. The Solent is a busy stretch of water, and the goal here is to create safe nesting islands for four different types of terns: the common, sandwich, little, and roseate terns.

What's really innovative about this project is that they are building shingle-topped rafts, essentially, small artificial islands! In April 2024, one of these new rafts had a wonderful success: it attracted the first breeding common terns in over 20 years! This project is a collaboration between several organizations and is funded by a program focused on protecting endangered landscapes. The plan is to create at least 10 new nesting sites by 2027. Why build new ones? Well, with rising sea levels due to climate change, some existing low-lying islands might eventually disappear. New islands can be strategically placed in areas that are safe from predators and away from busy human activity.

6. The Ongoing Debate: Fix or Build?

This brings us to the core of the discussion: should we focus our efforts on fixing the old, damaged homes, or on creating new, protected ones?

  • Fixing Old Homes (like Scorpion Rock): This approach is about restoring places that were once healthy habitats. It often involves removing threats like invasive plants or predators and replanting native species. The big advantage is that you're working with existing land that might already have some of the right conditions for seabirds. It can be very rewarding to see a degraded area come back to life. However, it can be a lot of hard work, and sometimes the restored areas might still be vulnerable to future threats.
  • Building New Homes (like the Solent rafts): This strategy is about creating entirely new safe spaces, often in locations chosen specifically to avoid current and future problems like sea-level rise. These new homes can be designed from the ground up to be ideal for seabirds, with protection from predators and human disturbance built-in. The challenge here is that it can be expensive and time-consuming to create new habitats. Plus, it's not always guaranteed that seabirds will choose to move into these brand-new spaces.

Both approaches have their merits, and the best strategy often depends on the specific situation, the types of seabirds involved, and the resources available. Many conservationists believe that a combination of both - fixing what we can and building where necessary - is the most effective way to ensure a secure future for these amazing ocean dwellers.
