Penguin Peril: Antarctica's Emperors Face Melting Ice

Emperor penguins are incredible survivors who brave the coldest place on Earth, but their icy home is melting. This mission helps you explore how they stay warm and why ice is so important to them.

The Big Question

How do emperor penguins stay warm in the freezing cold, and why do they need ice to survive?

What You'll Need

  • A large bowl or basin
  • Water
  • Ice cubes
  • A small plastic bag or food storage bag
  • A thermometer (optional)

Mission Steps

  1. Fill the Basin. Fill the large bowl or basin about halfway with cold water.
  2. Add Ice. Add a generous amount of ice cubes to the water to make it very cold.
  3. Prepare Your Hand. Place a few ice cubes inside the plastic bag and seal it tightly. This will be your "penguin."
  4. Feel the Cold. Place your bare hand into the cold water in the bowl. Feel how cold it is.
  5. Add Insulation. Now, submerge your "penguin" (the bag of ice) into the cold water. Feel the water again, and then try placing your hand next to the bag of ice. Notice the difference.

  • What did the bag of ice do when it was in the water? What did you notice when you put your hand next to it?
  • How might emperor penguins use their bodies or other things to stay warm like the bag of ice helps keep your hand warmer?

Take It Further

For older rangers (ages 9-12), research how emperor penguins huddle together in large groups to stay warm. Try to find out how many penguins might be in a huddle and how this collective warmth helps them survive the harsh Antarctic winds.

Q: My child is too scared to put their hand in the cold water. A: That's okay! Have them just observe the ice melting in the water and describe what they see.
