How do baby animals, big or small, get started in their world?

What You'll Need

• A notebook or paper
• Crayons, markers, or pencils
• Access to pictures or videos of baby animals (online or in books)

Mission Steps

1. Choose Your Animal. Pick one baby animal you want to learn about. It could be a whale, an elephant, a bird, or even a puppy!
2. Find a Birth Scene. Look for pictures or short videos showing how your chosen baby animal is born or takes its first moments of life.
3. Draw the Beginning. In your notebook, draw what you see. Show the baby animal and what's around it as it starts its life.
4. Note the Details. Next to your drawing, write down one or two interesting things you learned about how this baby animal begins its journey.

• What was the most surprising thing you saw when looking at your baby animal's beginning?
• How is your animal's start similar to or different from what we learned about baby whales?

For older rangers (ages 9-12), research the challenges your chosen baby animal faces in its first few days or weeks of life. Does it need to be strong and quick? Does it have help from parents or others? Add this information to your notebook.
