Earth's Magnetic Shield vs Tougher Tech: The SMILE Space Mission

In our episode about Earth's magnetic shield and the SMILE mission, we learned how our planet is protected from the Sun's powerful solar wind. Now, let's build our own model to see how this amazing shield works!

The Big Question

How does Earth's invisible magnetic shield protect us from the Sun?

What You'll Need

  • A large bowl or clear plastic bin
  • Water
  • A small toy boat or object that floats
  • A hairdryer (adult supervision required!)

Mission Steps

  1. Set the Scene. Fill the bowl about halfway with water. Place the toy boat in the center; this is your Earth.
  2. Start the Wind. Have an adult turn on the hairdryer to a medium setting (no heat). Aim the airflow from one side of the bowl toward the boat.
  3. Observe the Shield. Notice how the water (solar wind) pushes against the boat and creates a "bow wave" or a protective area around it.
  4. Simulate a Storm. Have the adult increase the hairdryer's speed or move it closer to create a stronger "wind." See how the "shield" around the boat reacts and protects it.

Talk About It

  • What did the water represent in our mission? What did the boat represent?
  • How did the "wind" from the hairdryer affect the water and the boat?
  • What happened when the "wind" got stronger? How is this like a solar storm?

Take It Further

For older rangers, try placing smaller objects (like pebbles) around the boat. See if the "wind" can push these smaller objects while the "shield" still protects the main boat. Discuss how this relates to how the magnetosphere protects satellites and astronauts in space.

Q: Is the water in the bowl dangerous? A: No, it's just regular water. Just be sure to do this mission on a surface that can get a little wet, or put a towel underneath. Q: Can I use my fan instead of a hairdryer? A: Yes, a fan can work too, especially if it has different speed settings. You just need a way to create a steady flow of air.
