Cosmic Frontiers: Unlocking Universe Mysteries with JWST

On our "Cosmic Frontiers" episode, we explored the incredible James Webb Space Telescope and the vastness of the observable universe. Now, let's bring a bit of that cosmic wonder down to Earth with a mission to understand how far light can travel!

The Big Question

How can we imagine the vast distance light travels from stars and galaxies to reach us?

What You'll Need

  • A large, open space (like a backyard or park)
  • A flashlight
  • A timer or stopwatch (optional)

Mission Steps

  1. Shine the Light. Stand at one end of your open space and shine the flashlight straight across it.
  2. Watch the Beam. Observe how the light travels in a straight line from the flashlight.
  3. Measure the Travel. If you have a timer, try to see how long it takes for the light to reach the other side (it will be very, very fast!).
  4. Imagine the Universe. Think about how much farther light from distant stars and galaxies has to travel to reach Earth.

Talk About It

  • What did you notice about how the flashlight beam traveled?
  • How is the light from the flashlight like the light from stars we see at night?
  • If the universe is so big, why can we only see a part of it?

Take It Further

For older rangers, research how scientists use the JWST to see light from the very early universe. This light has been traveling for billions of years! Can they find out how much longer it might take for light from even more distant objects to reach us?

FAQ

Q: My child is too young to understand "billions of years." How can I explain this? A: You can compare it to familiar longer time periods, like "from when Grandma was a little girl" or "longer than you've been alive." Focus on the idea that it's a really, really, really long time. Q: Is the flashlight beam really like starlight? A: Yes! Both are forms of light traveling through space. The main difference is the incredible distance and time involved for starlight.

    Finish with “What's one thing the episode didn't answer?” Stick it on the fridge — that's the start of the next adventure.
