Imagine a big family. Some cousins might look a lot alike but have totally different hobbies and live in different towns. That's kind of like axolotls and salamanders! They're both amphibians, meaning they start life in water and often move to land later. They even have a shared ancestor. But they’ve taken very different paths in life. Think of them as cousins who chose completely different lifestyles, developing unique skills and looks along the way.   • Gills vs. Lungs: Salamander babies have gills, and adult land salamanders grow lungs. Axolotls, though, keep their external gills forever and have tiny lungs they hardly ever use.
  • Habitat: Many adult salamanders live on land or partly in water. Axolotls, however, almost always live in water. They’re built for swimming and don't do well on land.

These captive axolotls are super important for saving the species, acting as a backup in case something happens to the wild ones. People are working hard to fix their natural habitat and protect the axolotls still living there, but it's a tough job.
